Gran Fondo World Championships roll into town
For some people, Sundays are all about lycra. In fact, Australians on average are spending $1400 on active wear each year, so lycra is all the rage!
If you want to come and check out some serious lycra and some serious cycling, head up to Kalamunda on Sunday 4 September as the World Championship road cycling race ‘Gran Fondo’ is taking over the town.
Coming from all over the world to take part, cyclists will set off from Elizabeth Quay in Perth city, transverse the stunning Zig Zag scenic drive and speed to the finishing line in Kalamunda. The serious competitors also have to complete two high-speed laps round the twists and turns of Mundaring Weir Road before crossing the line.
Kalamunda will be buzzing with tour cars, hydration stations and more lycra than you can shake a stick at, so come along and be part of all the action. Grab one of the free event bells near the finishing line and ring in the riders as they race for a spot on the podium.
If you’re a local, make sure you take note of the road closures for the event. Full details can be found here. Remember it’s father’s day too so give yourself some extra time if you’re heading over to dads or treating him to brunch in one of the hills’ eateries.
If you’re looking for somewhere to park, try the free park and ride service being offered by the Shire of Kalamunda. Leave your car at the Shire offices on Railway Road or the Kalamunda Water Park and catch one of the regular shuttle buses into the town centre.
It’s a real honour for Kalamunda to be chosen as the finishing line for this world-renowned cycling race. Many of us know what a hot spot Kalamunda is already for Perth-based cyclists and it looks like the secret is out!
For more information about the event, check out the Gran Fondo website.
Happy lycra day dad!
